Fall into Better Lymphatic Health

By Janet Townley,

Certified Functional Nutrition Counselor
As the weather cools and we spend more time indoors, it’s easy to become less active. Since the lymphatic system doesn’t have a pump like the heart, it relies on movement, deep breathing, and muscle contractions to keep fluid moving throughout the body.

The lymphatic system maintains fluid balance in your body and supports your immune system. Think of it as a drainage and cleanup system. Sometimes it can get congested and it doesn’t flow properly. This can lead to infections and other health concerns.

The lymphatic system depends largely on muscle movement, breathing, and healthy tissues to keep fluid moving efficiently.

Simple ways to support healthy lymph flow include daily walks, stretching or yoga, dry brushing, deep breathing, gentle lymphatic self-massage, staying well hydrated, and infrared sauna sessions.

Common Lymph Locations

There are some common lymph node locations that you can gently stimulate through touch and movement to help promote lymph flow. In addition, movement, deep breathing and hydration all support lymph flow.

• Behind and below the ears (my favorite!)
• Along the sides of the neck
• Under the jaw
• Above the collarbone
• Armpits
• Abdomen

Ways to Move the Lymph

Your body goes wherever you go; therefore, having the knowledge of how and where to gently massage the lymph can keep you healthy and avoid infections!

Think of your lymphatic system as your body’s housekeeping crew. It depends on you to keep it moving. Every walk, stretch, deep breath, and sauna session is another way to encourage healthy circulation and support your body’s natural cleansing processes.

Infrared Saunas

Infrared saunas warm the body from the inside out, increasing circulation and encouraging perspiration.

While sweat itself is not the primary route for removing toxins from the body (the liver and kidneys do most of that work), sweating can support overall wellness and may complement practices that encourage healthy lymphatic movement.
